After two years of holding the Global Mentoring Walk virtually, GMW returns in 2022 and was held at New Giza Sports Club on the 5th of March, from 9: 30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event was opened by the Minister of Social Solidarity Her Excellency Dr. Nivine ElKabbag. Founder and Managing Director of GISR Shaymaa Kadry started with a welcome note introducing the event and its details. From the US Embassy side, Deputy Chief of Mission Nicole Shampaine and Director of American Culture Center Eman Mansour delivered their remarks. A final speech was given by the founder of Oasis Community Center Dr Sally Hafez Bahgat reflecting on her experience as a GMW mentor for the past four years.
The Global Mentoring Walk is an opportunity to highlight the importance of women’s leadership and to accelerate the impact of women leaders through mentoring. It connects established women leaders and emerging women leaders to walk together in their community. As they walk, they discuss their personal and professional challenges and successes to establish a mentoring relationship, in which the established leader guides, advises and supports an emerging leader.
The theme of the event in Egypt was “Women in Development,” in which distinguished leaders in community development organizations mentored emerging women leaders who intend to work and develop in the development field and civil society organizations.
Before the event, applications were open to mentees: young ladies aged between 20-29 years old, who wanted to join the development field. From about 200 applications, 42 mentees were selected. Mentors from community development organizations – both national and international – were carefully chosen. 33 Mentors with proven record of achievements, success, and hard work from the UN Women, The World Food Program, The GIZ, Care International – Egypt, Sawiris Foundation, The British Council, The AUC, the USAID and other reputable organizations volunteered to be mentors during this walk.
